Turbosmart Turbochargers — your questions answered

Turbosmart Turbochargers — your questions answered

With one of the biggest launches with seen from Turbosmart at Sema yet, the announcement of their very own turbocharger range has the internet spooling. However, there are some questions only answered in Facebook comment sections, so we decided to get the correct information around a few specific topics.

Announcing an all-new turbocharger range among a sea of turbocharger conglomerates must be daunting to say the least, with those competitors having decades and decades of experience up their sleeves. However, although Turbosmart haven’t produced and sold turbochargers in the past, they’ve been in the turbocharger industry for a couple of decades and are experts in turbocharger control.

The next level for them though, was to dive head first into the turbocharger market itself. Now, their own turbocharger control products will be applicable to their very own range of turbochargers and they're already proving to be incredibly efficient, fast-spooling units.

Oil cooled units will be available by the end of November and the water cooled units will be available during December — get your orders in early! Let's get into those questions.

We caught up with Brendan Lee, APAC Sales and Marketing Manager of Turbosmart Australia to get the low-down on a few burning questions we've seen arrising in the comments section, internet-wide.

Hey Brendan, thanks for taking the time to chat with us. So, why turbos?
Well it's in our name! We have spent the last 27 years managing boost control in the world's fastest cars and helping them make boost has been on the cards for many years now. We are very excited to enter this space and be able to offer what we believe is the best turbocharger available on the market.

Who assisted in the design process?
This project has definitely been a team effort, we make no bones about it — we wanted from day one for our turbocharger to compete with the best, and to do that you need to have the best on your team. With that in mind we met with and consulted with a host of industry professionals, eventually we found a great fit with Harry Hruska (founder of Precision Turbo) to assist us in creating a ground up build of turbo. We always knew we wanted to enter this space but wanted to stick by our mantra of manufacturing the best performing products available or we simply would not have gone ahead with this project. Harry shares this vision with us and together we are really excited to be finally rolling these turbo's off the production line.

There is a plethora of new technology we have put into these turbos which is of our own proprietary design and the results speak for themselves as we have now proven we have the most responsive turbo on the market.

Where are they made?
In short, all over and there is good reason for that. Due to not owning a foundry for castings we have split a portion of machining and casting in Asia, a portion of machining locally in Australia and final balancing and assembly is in Australia and USA. No matter where final assembly happens we are still applying our normal levels of quality control (QC). At Turbosmart we have the strictest QC process for any automotive aftermarket manufacturer on all of our products, not just turbos, which is why we are offering the exact same warranty on our Turbochargers as everything else with our name on it, that's two years manufacturers warranty.

What materials and features do your turbos include?
We have tried to offer and include as much tech as possible into our new turbocharger range and as such they all include a very aggressive aerodynamic compressor cover with 7+7 billet splitter wheels, lightweight 310s stainless steel investment cast turbine housings, lightweight aluminium compressor covers, CFD driven designed housings for optimal ARs and flow, T14 inconel turbine wheels which can handle extreme EGTs, every unit is VSR speed balanced and most importantly our own proprietary dual ceramic ball bearing system to ensure maximum performance and longevity of our product.

Any info on sizing range and future releases?
We have entered the market hard and fast releasing a very respectable range of turbos from a 58mm size all the way through to a 78mm size for now. Within this range you will find reverse rotation units, different rear housing options, internal wastegated versions with our own custom rear housings to suit and even water cooled versions for those that need it.

As for sizing, we will definitely continue expanding our range up in size with the drag racers in mind looking to break world records and also down in frame size to cater more for the four-cylinder market.

Thanks for chatting with us, Brendan — we can't wait to get our hands on them!
