Ah, the day we've all been awaiting: Grant Paik's dyno day. Well, maybe not all of us out there, but in the NSTParts shop, we've been eagerly awaiting the day that Grant's 2JZ absolute unit of an Altezza hit the dyno to make some numbers. A huge shoutout to Grant, as the amount of work he has put in is admirable, with most of it built at home in his shed — more than most of us can say.
You've most likely seen Grant on Instagram or TikTok — he's partial to a hard-parking, limiter-bashing session, but we're told that's the old Grant, with the new goal to build something capable of taking on your usual Chrome-style events, with roll racing, drag racing, and a bit of circuit work. The previous engine package built by ST Hitec was no slouch, making 515kW at the rear hubs with a Borgwarner S366SX-E.
The aim of the game this time, though, is better response, with the 2JZ now being force-fed by a Garrett G40-1150 sitting on top of a 6Boost manifold — all backed by a Samsonas RS90 five-speed sequential gearbox. Yes, absolutely bonkers in a road-going Altezza, we know.
Beyond that, the Altezza is somewhat similar, but Grant has spent a huge amount of time tidying up small bits and pieces here and there. With the big push from Brian at NDT Developments to get it done, Grant moved heaven and earth (and a few clutch lines) to make it happen.
Unfortunately, the Altezza destroyed two clutch lines the day before and on the day of the dyno session booking. With this not phasing Brian, he was still able to tune it without the clutch operational. It wasn't long before the Altezza was churning out an easy 504kW on wastegate pressure (21psi) with the G40-1150 with 1.01AR housing proving an incredibly responsive turbo.
With a few extra psi, Brian pushed the stock bottom-end 2JZ to an incredibly easy 564.9kW at the rear hubs. With Grant not wanting to send himself into a tree, boost will be turned down somewhat. However, with the current wastegate spring pressure set at 21psi, it won't make less than 500kW. The plan is to remove one of the springs, so base pressure will sit around 14psi, which should net an easy low to mid 400kW, then boost by gear will be tuned in later.
Overall, a successful day on the dyno for ol' Grant. We're proud of the young lad for what he's able to achieve in the garage by himself. A huge thanks to Brian at NDT for always fitting us in last minute too! With a built bottom end and more boost, Brian estimates the G40-1150 would be happy around the 600kW mark, which is damn impressive!
Considering we've got a few forged bottom ends in stock, we don't think it will take long for Grant to bite the bullet... Or, should we just start docking his wages and drop one off at his house?
